The Wait is Over: The Rubin Observatory’s 10-Year LSST Has Officially Begun!

We are thrilled to share that the NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory has officially commenced its highly anticipated Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) last night.
From its vantage point in Chile, this 10-year campaign will capture ultra-wide, ultra-high-definition time-lapse images of the entire southern sky every few nights. Operating the largest digital camera in the world with 3,200 megapixels, the observatory functions as a massive real-time discovery machine, generating up to seven million alerts each night.
This historic milestone opens up incredible new frontiers for multi-messenger astronomy and transient follow-ups, and we look forward to tracking its discoveries with Astro-COLIBRI!
